Chief cop delighted with road hog test drive
Tshwane Metro Police director Schalk van Deventer is a lucky man.Van Deventer, head of the Metro Police's road policing division, is the envy of his colleagues after being tasked with test-driving a Harley Davidson Road King.“This is a special motorcycle and I am happy to be test-driving it,” said Van Deventer. He said the motorcycle – which has a retail price of R187 000 – was ideal for the police. The Metro Police are also test-driving an on-off road bike made available by Menlyn Harley Davidson dealer Jos Joubert. Van Deventer said they normally tested motor vehicles and motorcycles supplied by manufacturers. This provides the Metro Police with a chance to determine the best or most suitable vehicle or motorcycle on the market.“All the manufacturers are afforded an opportunity to tender when we want to buy a new vehicle or motorcycle,” said Van Deventer. He said the motorcycle would be handed to patrol units next month before being returned to the dealer in Menlyn. The motorcycle could be used to escort heads of State and other dignitaries visiting Tshwane.Joubert said that an advantage would be that the Metro Police would belong to the international mounted police programme if they purchased the motorcycles.
